Marker Text: July 22, 1864. Walker's div. [CS] (Gen. Hugh Mercer, comdg.) was deployed for an attack up the valley (N.W.) on the Federal rear: Stevens' Brigade (Col. J.C. Nisbet) on the rt.; Gist's Brigade on the left; Mercer's Brigade (Col. Wm. Barkuloo) in support. Bate's div. was on the rt. E. of the Cr. It was a surprise attack -- not on the Federal rear, but on the front of Mersy's Brigade of Sweeny's div. with artillery, supported by one of Fuller's brigades, all 16th A.C. troops.

Cleburne's & Maney's divs. [CS] struck the Federal left flank on Flat Shoals Rd. (W. of here), & drove it northward to Leggett's Hill.
