The Atlanta Campaign: Mosteller’s Plantation

Year Erected:1989

Marker Text: As US forces under General William T. Sherman marched from Chattanooga toward Atlanta during the American Civil War, they passed through Bartow County. On May 18, 1864, Butterfield’s (US) 3rd division of the 20th Army Corps (A.C.) moved toward the Jonathon McDow House two miles south of Adairsville. On the way, they reached Mosteller’s Plantation Road fourteen miles west of Adairsville. Meanwhile, Schofield’s 23rd A.C. (US) camped at Mosteller’s Plantation until dawn on May 19, lagging behind the 20th A.C., also marching from Field’s Mill. They then moved southwest through Little Prairie, joining Old Highway 41 at the McDow House shortly after the 20th A.C. had moved southward.
