Marker Text: This building was constructed by the Trustees of the Richmond Academy and first opened in 1802 to house the Academy of Richmond County, which was chartered in 1783. Previously, the school was located in buildings between Reynolds and Bay Streets on the east side of Elbert (now 4th) Street, which were abandoned in 1799 because of their poor condition. The school closed during the Civil War and was used as a Confederate hospital (1863-1865), then later as US Army barracks (1865-1867) until the building was returned to the academy’s Trustees and reopened in 1868. The Academy of Richmond County occupied this building until 1926, when it relocated to larger facilities on Baker Avenue. Other organizations housed in this building include the Young Men’s Library Association of Augusta (1929-1960) and the Augusta Museum (1933-1994).
