Old Federal Road

Marker Text*:  The Federal Road, western Georgia´s earlier vehicular route, passed here leading westward across the Creek Indian Country from Fort Hawkins (now Macon) to the Alabama River above Mobile. Permission to open the trace was granted by the Indians in 1805. The thoroughfare followed closely a part of the noted Lower Creek Trading Path from Augusta to the Creek Indians.

General John Floyd´s army followed the road to Alabama during the Creek Wars of 1813-1814.
LaFayette traveled this way in March, 1825 enroute to Alabama.

The old road long served as an early emigrant and post route to the West.
