Year Erected: 1954
Marker Text: Jerusalem Church, also referred to as Ebenezer Church, was built in 1767-69 by Lutheran Protestant Christians who came to Georgia in 1734 after being exiled from Catholic Salzburg in Europe. The Salzburgers originally settled further inland in Old Ebenezer but moved to New Ebenezer in 1736 due to the location’s poor conditions. The community first built a wooden structure on this site in 1741 and named it Jerusalem Church. During the Revolution, the British occupied New Ebenezer and damaged the church by using it as a hospital and stable. Though the town of Ebenezer no longer exists, Jerusalem Church has an active congregation and houses the oldest continuing Lutheran congregation in the United States to worship in its historic building.
