Marker Text: The Old Coffee Road, one of the earliest vehicular and postal routes in southwest Georgia, passed near here. The road ran southwest from the Ocmulgee River through modern Lax, Nashville, Cecil, Barwick, and Thomasville, to the Florida line north of Tallahassee. The Route was opened by direction of the state in 1823 to bring munitions and supplies to the Florida border to support settlement of the newly acquired territory. The road was constructed under the direction of John Coffee, congressman and general of the Georgia Militia. This early route provided a direct connection from the settled middle and eastern sections of the state into southwest Georgia and west Florida. Portions of the original route remain in use today.
Re-erected by the Georgia Historical Society in 2026.
