The Georgia Historical Society’s Georgia History Festival Engages Students, Families, and Communities with Georgia’s Past Through Family-Friendly Events

Savannah, GA, February 9, 2026 – The Georgia Historical Society (GHS) welcomed students, families, and communities across Georgia to a weekend of educational programming as part of the Georgia History Festival, including the Colonial Faire & Muster at Wormsloe State Historic Site and the statewide celebration of Super Museum Sunday.

Held on Saturday, February 7, and Sunday, February 8, 2026, the Colonial Faire & Muster brought eighteenth-century Georgia to life through costumed interpreters, period demonstrations, and interactive activities exploring daily life in the colony’s earliest years. Visitors experienced historical cooking, craft, and military demonstrations, along with music, dance, and storytelling inspired by the colonial period.

Throughout the weekend, families and visitors enjoyed hands-on learning opportunities that connected Georgia’s colonial past with the present. The popular living-history program was free to the public on Sunday, thanks to generous support from Hyundai, with additional support from the Society of Colonial Wars in the State of Georgia.

On Sunday, February 8, more than 140 museums and historic sites across Georgia participated in Super Museum Sunday, opening their doors free of charge to celebrate the state’s rich history, arts, and culture. Sponsored by The Southern Company, Super Museum Sunday encouraged residents and visitors alike to explore historic sites, house museums, art museums, and other cultural destinations in communities throughout Georgia.

“These two Georgia History Festival events are a great way to explore the rich history and culture that has shaped our state,” said GHS Manager of Programs and Special Projects Elyse Butler. “From experiencing colonial life, moments from the civil rights movement, and even exploring our state's ecology, the events provide residents with a unique opportunity to learn about our state's history.”

The Georgia History Festival is the signature K–12 educational program of the Georgia Historical Society, reaching hundreds of thousands of students statewide each year. Beginning each fall, the Festival offers a wide range of public programs, exhibits, events, and educational resources designed to support classroom learning and encourage Georgians to explore the richness of the state’s past. Popular annual events include Constitution Day, Keynote Presentations, the Colonial Faire & Muster, Super Museum Sunday, the Georgia Day Expo, and the Trustees Gala.
