Artist Statement Expand

While in Savannah, I have heard about the Jewish community, but I never knew much more than that they are a big community in the city. Once, I learned in our class that Jews arrived in Savannah five months after Oglethorpe established this land as a colony. I wanted to know more, so I went to the Synagogue on Monterey Square, amazed by the interior, especially the stained-glass windows. In addition, recently, my family and I have been learning more about Jewish customs and traditions. I thought it would be awesome to learn more about this community in a place where I have been attending school for four years. For my original artwork (Figure 6), I made a silk scarf design with iconography seen in the stained-glass windows in the Synagogue, parts of the structure of the building like the replica of the walls of Jerusalem, and the famous Torah that Mickve Israel has.
