The Georgia Historical Society (GHS) is the premier independent statewide institution responsible for collecting, examining and teaching Georgia history.

In some cases graduate level coursework or a Master’s degree or Ph.D. may be required.
Current Opportunities
Special Collections Director
The role of the Special Collections Director is to lead, plan, manage, and oversee a private library and archival collection and to ensure the provision of high-quality reference services to patrons. The Special Collections Director works closely with other senior leaders as well as the Executive Vice President and the President to ensure that the work in the library and archives is in keeping with the culture and strategic goals and objectives of the institution.
Reference Desk Manager
The Reference Desk Manager is responsible for coordinating reference staffing, scheduling the day-to-day operations of reference services, providing in person and remote reference services, and performing copy cataloging and original cataloging of library and archival materials according to accepted national standards.
Reference and Education Archivist
The Reference and Education Archivist serves as the primary point of contact between the GHS Research Center and the Jepson House Education Center, handling research and reference-related inquiries internal and external to the institution. The Reference and Education Archivist directly reports to the Vice President of Education and Programs and will directly supervise Reference Desk Assistants.
Reference Desk Assistant (full-time or part-time opportunities available)
The Reference Desk Assistant is responsible for assisting with reference requests and scheduling of the GHS library and archives. Responsibilities include helping patrons with locating reference and other information, providing excellent customer service to patrons, and maintenance of reference resources.
Director of Education
The Director of Education is responsible for overseeing the design, implementation, and promotion of original education resources in a variety of formats for diverse audiences, including students, educators, school administration, and the general public. In addition, the Director of Education will actively participate in programs related to the institution and to education (such as the Georgia History Festival) and other GHS initiatives including working with market research firms and other outsourced consultants.
Education and Outreach Specialist
The Education and Outreach Specialist is responsible for working with Georgia school districts as well as private and home school educators to promote the value of, and encourage the use of, GHS programming, initiatives, and educational resources. This position will work with the program staff including the Education Manager to understand and be able to share programmatic initiatives in a variety of formats for diverse audiences, including various levels of educators and school administrators.
Program Associate
The Program Associate is responsible for working with others to implement GHS membership and educational outreach programs including activities related to the Georgia History Festival, public lectures, online and in-person workshops, and other programs and events. This is a full-time position based in Savannah, Georgia that reports to the VP of Education and Programs.
Internships
Education and Program Intern
The Georgia Historical Society seeks an organized, detailed-oriented, and energetic student who wants to gain industry knowledge through experience with the daily operations of a nationally recognized education and research institution. The successful candidate will assist with special projects, including the development and presentation of new educational materials for Georgia students and teachers.
Based at the GHS Savannah headquarters, duties will include resource development, database management, communication with local organizations, schools, teachers, and community leaders, event publicity, and general office support. This internship will also include website content development as well as assistance with various educator and student training projects and other GHS programs. This semester-long internship (January 2026 – May 2026) will require 15-20 hours per week during the internship period. A stipend is available for this internship.
