The 20th Corps

Year Erected: 1958

Marker Text*:  On Dec. 5, 1864, Brig. Gen. A. S. Williams' 20th Corps of Gen. Sherman's army (U), which had left Atlanta on Nov. 15th on its destructive March to the Sea, camped with its advance at this point. Maj. Gen. H. W. Slocum, USA, commanding the Left Wing (14th and 20th Corps) accompanied the 20th Corps. At this stage of the campaign, the 14th Corps (the extreme left) was marching on the Old Savannah Road (Ga 24) near the Savannah River, the 17th Corps,  accompanied by Gen. Sherman, on the Old Louisville Road (Ga 17) near the Central Railroad, and the 15th Corps (the extreme right) on the Old Milledgeville Road, across the Ogeechee River.
