DESCRIPTION:The Georgia Historical Society will hold a dedication for a new
  historical marker: “Quiet Conflict” - The Civil Rights Movement in Br
 unswick. The dedication will take place on Friday\, February 23\, 2024\, a
 t 11:00 a.m. at Brunswick City Hall in Brunswick\, Georgia. The event is o
 pen to the public.\n\nThe marker reads:\n“Quiet Conflict”\nThe Civil R
 ights Movement in Brunswick\nAt a time when many cities experienced social
  unrest during the Civil Rights Movement\, Brunswick achieved partial dese
 gregation largely without national publicity. In the early 1960s\, a telev
 ision documentary called “Quiet Conflict” covered Reverend Julius Caes
 ar Hope and members of the Brunswick Chapter of the NAACP as they integrat
 ed Brunswick’s businesses through nonviolent campaign tactics. Operating
  from lessons learned during the Albany Movement\, Black and White civic\,
  business\, and community leaders relied on open communication for negotia
 tion. Recognizing the economic impact of the African-American community (m
 ore than 40 percent of Brunswick’s total population) business leaders in
 tegrated with few instances of picketing. Brunswick schools also partially
  integrated through a voluntary plan proposed in 1963.  Brunswick and Gly
 nn County schools did not fully integrate until a court-ordered mandate en
 ded the dual school system in 1970.\nErected by the Georgia Historical Soc
