Savannah, GA, January 12, 2009--The Georgia Historical Society’s Georgia Days 2009 Honoree Curriculum Packet and educator information forms are now available for download at www.georgiahistory.com!  This new curriculum resource outlines the life and legacy of internationally renowned lyricist and Georgia native Johnny Mercer and has been developed for teachers of students at all grade levels.

The 2009 curriculum highlights the significance of Mercer’s Savannah childhood in his development as a world-famous writer and musician, following his life from his hometown to New York, England, and Hollywood.  The material is punctuated by teaching tips, vocabulary lists, media links, and suggestions for classroom activities and further research.  Please visit the Georgia Historical Society today at www.georgiahistory.com and follow the Georgia Days Link to access the Mercer curriculum packet and learn more about other educational opportunities available to teachers.

Purpose of GHS’s Georgia Days

Georgia Days is the signature educational program of the Georgia Historical Society.  Held annually around the anniversary of the founding of the colony of Georgia on February 12, 1733, this two-week event brings history to life for tens of thousands of Georgia schoolchildren through a variety of programs, ranging from a series of school events and curriculum, crafts workshops, the two-day Colonial Faire and Muster living-history program held at Wormsloe State Historic Site, and the colorful Georgia Days parade.  By engaging students in interactive learning experiences, Georgia Days sparks the imagination, develops critical thinking processes, and opens the exciting world of the past to exploration, study, and understanding.
