Savannah, GA – December 1, 2008.  GHS President Dr. Todd Groce will present the Roger K. Warlick Local History Achievement Awards for 2008 at 12:00 p.m. on December 4, 2008.  The recipients are the Columbus Museum, Shaw High School Young Historians Club, and the Historic Columbus Foundation. The awards recognize the efforts of historical organizations that interpret the history of the State of Georgia to the general public.

The Columbus Museum and Shaw High School Young Historians Club are being recognized in the exhibit category for their outstanding work in the creation and interpretation of The Chattahoochee Valley World War II Homefront exhibit. The Historic Columbus Foundation is being recognized in the programs category for its Red Clay, White Water, and Blues program. This educational program highlighted the history of Columbus and the region with lectures at a variety of venues throughout the city on a wide range of topics. They included the Creek Indians, the textile industry, the Civil War and the River among others.

“We hope this series of local history programs will continue to inform our citizens — both ‘old Columbus’ and newcomers — about past people and events,” said Dr. Virginia Causey, Red Clay, White Water, and Blues  organizer. “We want to provoke a dialogue between the past and present, a civic conversation that will help us understand and be prepared for what the future may hold.”

In addition to presenting the Warlick Award at the December 4 event, Dr. Groce will present a lecture, “Saving Private Ryan: World War II in History and Memory.”  The program is free and open to the public and will take place at the WWII Company Street Mess Hall, behind the National Infantry Museum on the campus of Fort Benning in Columbus. This will be a "Lunch and Lecture" and attendees are encouraged to bring a bag lunch to enjoy during the presentation; beverages and dessert will be provided.

The GHS Affiliate Chapter Program is a growing network of local historical organizations throughout Georgia and beyond.  Members include hundreds of historical and genealogical societies, commissions, museums, foundations, archives, preservation organizations, churches, and patriotic organizations.  For more information on the Affiliate Chapter Program and to download a membership form, please visit www.georgiahistory.com.
