Savannah, GA – October 17, 2008. “A meticulous recreation of the Civil War in Georgia’s rice kingdom,” says Kevin Boyle about Jacqueline Jones’s new book, Saving Savannah: The City and the Civil War in the October 12 issue of The New York Times Book Review. “She traces a tragic story with the thoroughness and sophistication that have marked her distinguished career.”
Making a return visit to Savannah, Jones will discuss Saving Savannah at a Georgia Historical Society lecture Thursday, October 23, 7:00 p.m. at Wesley Monumental United Methodist Church in Savannah. The book will be available for purchase at the event, and a book signing will follow Jones’ talk.
The program is free and open to the public.
Winner of both a Bancroft Prize from Columbia University and a MacArthur Fellowship, Jones teaches history at the University of Texas at Austin and is the author of seven books.
For Saving Savannah she drew on military records, diaries, letters, newspapers, and memoirs – many found at the Georgia Historical Society – to weave the stories of individual men and women, bankers and dockworkers, planters and field hands, enslaved laborers and free people of color into a depiction of a city struggling to reinvent itself in the face of sweeping societal changes.
