Savannah, GA – October 10, 2008.  W. Todd Groce, Ph.D., president and CEO of the Georgia Historical Society (GHS) will present his organization’s prestigious 2008 Roger K. Warlick Local History Achievement Award for Archival Excellence to the Cherokee County Historical Society (CCHS) at a public program on October 14 at 7:00 p.m.

The Archival Excellence award recognizes efforts by historical organizations within the GHS’s statewide Affiliate Chapter Program to increase public awareness of the importance of archival work and its lasting contribution to scholarship.

The Cherokee County Historical Society is being recognized for its outstanding work in preserving and processing the Buddy Alexander Photograph Collection, and for making the collection available to researchers.  The collection represents the work of local photographer William “Buddy” Alexander, who recorded Cherokee County from the late 1940s to the mid-70s.

“We are thrilled to receive this kind of validation of our work from an organization like the Georgia Historical Society,” said Stefanie Joyner, executive director of the Cherokee County Historical Society, who will accept the award along with her colleague, archivist Meghan Nepper.  “The collection presents relatively recent history and will be extremely valuable to future scholars.”

In addition to presenting the Warlick Award at the October 14 event, Dr. Groce will present a lecture, “Saving Private Ryan: World War II in History and Memory.”  The program is free and open to the public and will take place at CCHS’s historic Rockbarn located at 658 Marietta Highway in Canton, Georgia.

The GHS Affiliate Chapter Program is a growing network of local historical organizations throughout Georgia and beyond.  Members include historical and genealogical societies, commissions, museums, foundations, archives, preservation organizations, churches, and patriotic organizations.  For more information on the Affiliate Chapter Program and to download a membership form, please visit www.georgiahistory.com.

The Cherokee County Historical Society is dedicated to historic preservation and education.  It was founded in 1975 and has a membership in excess of 400.  Quarterly meetings focus on the history or culture of Cherokee County and the State of Georgia.   For more information visit www.rockbarn.org.
