Georgia Historical Society Awarded $65,000 Grant from The Frances and Beverly DuBose Foundation
Savannah, GA- February 27, 2008. The Georgia Historical Society has been awarded a $65,000 grant from The Frances and Beverly DuBose Foundation to support the conservation, preservation, arrangement, description, and cataloging of the Ossabaw Island and Torrey-West Family Papers collection.
The Ossabaw Island and Torrey-West Family Papers collection includes significant archival resources that offer glimpses into the stories of people, places, and events that, together, help to make up the history of Ossabaw Island. From the earliest royal grant of the colonial era, through the slaves and masters of the plantation system, and on to the students and scholars of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, diverse cultures and individuals are represented in this exceptional collection. In recent years, GHS has been presented with a growing demand for researcher access to the Ossabaw Island and Torrey-West Family papers. Through generous grant support, The Frances and Beverly DuBose Foundation is helping GHS to preserve and share this unique collection with researchers of every variety who seek to explore and more fully understand the island's history, its people, and their role in the development of the region, state, and nation.
The Georgia Historical Society, headquartered in Savannah, is the oldest cultural institution in the state and one of the oldest historical organizations in the nation. It is the first and only statewide historical society in Georgia. For nearly 175 years, GHS has collected, preserved, and shared Georgia history through a variety of educational outreach programs, publications, and research services.
