Georgia Historical Society Awarded $25,000 Grant from The Peyton Anderson Foundation
Savannah, GA- July 18, 2007. The Georgia Historical Society has been awarded a $25,000 grant from The Peyton Anderson Foundation to catalog GHS collections relating to Macon and Bibb County, Georgia as a part of its Expanding Audiences for History: Access for a New Century technology project.
GHS's Expanding Audiences for History technology project is a $1.1 million, multi-phase endeavor centered on the implementation of an online public access catalog (OPAC) as a part of an integrated library system and the creation of an interactive, user-friendly Web site that will provide unprecedented, online access to GHS library and archives collections as well as to its history education programming and study resources. Through their generous grant support, The Peyton Anderson Foundation has helped to ensure that collections relating to Macon and Bibb County, Georgia are included in the OPAC while also helping GHS to meet its goal of providing technologically relevant research tools to modern research audiences.
About The Peyton Anderson Foundation
Peyton Tooke Anderson, Jr., a native of Macon and the owner of The Macon Telegraph and The Macon News, specified in his will that the bulk of his estate should be used for charitable purposes. Accordingly, The Peyton Anderson Foundation, Inc., was formed to handle the broad distribution of funds, with preference being given to Macon and Bibb County, Georgia. Mr. Anderson stated that the people of Macon, Bibb County, and Middle Georgia had been good to him, and he in turn wished to be good to them.
The Georgia Historical Society, headquartered in Savannah, is the oldest cultural institution in the state and one of the oldest historical organizations in the nation. It is the first and only statewide historical society in Georgia.
