Previously Unprocessed Collections Now Open for Research

September 23, 2009, Savannah, Ga. - The Georgia Historical Society (GHS) is pleased to announce the completion of year one of its Reclaiming the Past: Creating Access to Hidden Collections project.  As a result of the work conducted in the past year thousands of previously unavailable materials covering all aspects of Georgia's fascinating history are now available for review and research.

Supported by the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC), the goal of the Reclaiming the Past project is to maximize researcher access to archival resources hidden within GHS’s backlog.  During year one of the project GHS has completed a survey of unprocessed collections and made over 200 collections, representing 220 cubic feet of material and thousands of documents, available for research.  The collections include everything from personal papers and organizational records to photographs and postcards to maps from the Colonial era to the late 20th century.
