Statesboro, GA – September 15, 2009. The Georgia Historical Society (GHS) is honoring State Sen. Jack Hill with a Presidential Citation for his outstanding service to the people of Georgia. W. Todd Groce, Ph.D., President and CEO of GHS, will present the citation to Sen. Hill at the next meeting of the Bulloch County Historical Society at R.J.’s Restaurant in Statesboro on Monday, September 21 at 11:30 a.m.
The citation recognizes Sen. Hill’s efforts to ensure the continuation of the historical marker program and to preserve and make accessible for future generations of Georgians the irreplaceable records and documents cared for by the Georgia Historical Society. Sen. Hill’s steadfast support of history has made it possible for Georgians of all ages and visitors from around the world to understand better the unique and fascinating story of our state.
“Through his continued support of history, Sen. Hill has contributed directly to the education of our state’s citizens and school children and helped the state of Georgia to generate millions of dollars in tourism revenue,” according to Dr. Groce.

Historical markers, which recognize people, places and events, are effective tools for economic development, connecting tourists and students of all ages to the places where history happened and encouraging local tourism and general state-wide interest. GHS has administered Georgia's historical marker program since 1998, erecting over 150 markers statewide.
The Georgia Historical Society's library and archives is a preeminent research center for American and Georgia history. The library and archives house the oldest and one of the most outstanding collections of manuscripts, books, maps, photographs, architectural drawings, portraits, and artifacts related to Georgia and its role in American history.
