SAVANNAH- July 13, 2009. The Georgia Historical Society is pleased to announce that Southern LNG, an El Paso company, will once again be the signature sponsor for the GHS Georgia Days events.
“We are so pleased that Southern LNG has decided to partner with us again to bring the experience of history to Savannah and Georgia’s school children. This program with their contribution is a real investment in our students’ education,” said Laura García-Culler, Executive Vice President of GHS.
GHS Georgia Days events include a variety of programs and educational opportunities for school-age children and students of all ages across the state.
“Working with GHS over the years Southern LNG has developed a full appreciation of the work they do in its entirety,” Chris Humes, Director of LNG Operations, El Paso Corporation, said. “As a neighbor in the community we understand the importance of educating the children in Savannah and throughout the state of Georgia on its unique heritage.”
Celebrating the founding of the colony of Georgia at Savannah, on February 12, 1733, by James Edward Oglethorpe, has been a tradition among Georgians since 1734. The purpose of Georgia Days is to encourage a better understanding and appreciation for Georgia’s history among the people of our State. The events begin on February 2, 2010 and continue until February 13th. This year Georgia Days honors Jackie Robinson, a Georgia native, legendary baseball player who broke the Major League color barrier, and a major figure in the American Civil Rights Movement.
The Georgia Days Birthday Bash and Awards Gala will conclude the two weeks of events and will feature the annual induction of the Georgia Trustees. This year, Governor Perdue and GHS will recognize and honor both baseball legend Hank Aaron and Ted Turner, CNN Founder and Chairman, Turner Enterprises, Inc. These 2010 Trustees are both Georgians who have made outstanding contributions to the development of our state and nation.
“We are thrilled that both Ted Turner and Hank Aaron have agreed to join us here in Savannah next February and offer our sincere thanks to the Southern LNG for their participation in the 2010 Georgia Days”, said Ms. Garcia-Culler.
