SAVANNAH/ATLANTA— June 30, 2009.  The Georgia Historical Society is pleased to announce that it is expanding its presence across the state by opening an office in the metro-Atlanta area. The purpose of the midtown Atlanta office is to offer more extensive services in the capital city and to the upcountry residents of Georgia.

GHS has been headquartered in Savannah, Georgia’s first city, since the organization was chartered by the General Assembly in 1839, when Milledgeville was the state capital and the town that became Atlanta was a fledgling railroad terminus.  Georgia’s only statewide historical society and the oldest cultural institution in the state, GHS has been in operation for nearly 175 years.  The mission of the Georgia Historical Society is to collect, preserve, and share Georgia’s history by operating a library and archive at its headquarters in Savannah, by presenting a variety of educational programs across the state, and by authoring publications on Georgia and southern history for use by scholars and students of all ages around the nation.

“GHS has worked for a number of years to broaden its presence across the state and to bring its services to all the people of Georgia,” said President and CEO, Dr. W. Todd Groce, “the new office is a continuation of these efforts.”  The Atlanta office, located at 260 14th Street, will be focused on supporting GHS’s programming and development initiatives for the Atlanta area and upcountry regions.

The society will continue its work on administering Georgia’s Historical Marker program, conducting field work, and presenting programs all around the state.  In the fall, Atlanta will be the site of the 2009 Profiles in Leadership roundtable discussion: Leadership in Crisis: The Leo Frank Lynching.  The program will feature former governor Roy Barnes, and authors Matthew Bernstein and Steve Oney.  To learn more about this program and other upcoming events, go to www.georgiahistory.com.
