Savannah, GA – May 8, 2009. The Georgia Historical Society is pleased to announce "See You in Class," a series of entertaining and informative educational programs ranging from week-long seminars on the Civil War and the American Presidency, to guided historical walking tours of historic downtown Savannah, to hands-on workshops in genealogy, archival preservation, and oral history. Open to the public and conducted by GHS professional staff, all classes and workshops will be held in the reading room of historic Hodgson Hall, GHS's statewide headquarters at the corner of Whitaker and Gaston Streets in downtown Savannah. No prior knowledge of any subject is necessary, and all ages are welcome to enroll.
GHS President and CEO Dr. W Todd Groce will offer two week-long seminars on leadership during the Civil War and the war’s most decisive battles. Dr. Stan Deaton, GHS Senior Historian, will lead a seminar on the most dynamic presidents of the 20th century and how they transformed the "Bully Pulpit" into the most powerful branch of American government.
GHS Director of Programs Christy Crisp will lead two separate downtown Savannah walking tours, inspired by the rich collections of the Georgia Historical Society and focusing on some of Savannah’s most fascinating women. Participants will have unique opportunities to view original and rare materials from the GHS archives followed by guided tours of the city’s Historic Landmark District.
Nora Lewis, Lynnette Stoudt, and Alison Bentley from GHS’s Library and Archives will provide professional guidance and support for participants interested in getting started in family history research and in the basic preservation of family materials. Interested in oral history? GHS's very own oral history expert, John Dickinson, will teach two separate basic workshops in gathering and processing oral histories.
Workshops and tours are offered on multiple dates throughout the summer, so visit www.georgiahistory.com to view complete course descriptions, prices, and to make reservations. For more information, call 912.651.2125, ext. 40. All offerings are open to the public, but GHS members will receive a 10% discount.
