William H. Baker, Jr. was born on 21 February 1922 in Columbus, Georgia. In 1942 he joined the United States Army and was an officer serving in France during World War II. In 1967, Baker retired from active military service. Baker moved to Savannah, Georgia in 1979 where he became active in various veterans organizations including the Savannah chapters of the Retired Officers Association and the Military Order of the World Wars.

 Scope and content note

This collection contains a memoir compiled in 1999 by William H. Baker detailing his career in the military from 1936 to 1967. Also included are photocopies of letters, newspaper clippings, maps, photographs, military orders, and military reports regarding Baker's service in the Army with the 339th Engineer General Service Regiment, the 78th Infantry Division, and the 989th Engineer Treadway Bridge Company during World War II.
