Organizational history

The Children's Botanical Garden of Tiles is located in front of the Garrison Elementary School on West Jones Street in Savannah, Georgia. It first opened in October 1997 and was designed to provide a venue through which children from all over the world could participate in a memorable hands-on learning experience to commemorate the 1996 Olympics. In the summer of 1996, artist Polly Cooper conducted tile workshops for local and international students. Within this workshop, children used Georgia red clay to create a 6"x6" tile decorated with a garden theme including birds, butterflies, and frogs. Also featured in the garden is a bronze relief sculpture by Haywood Nicols of a lion and a lamb beneath the Tree of Knowledge, conveying the theme of the garden, "Peace and Friendship." The garden also contains plantings which were found in the original Trustees' Garden, an early agricultural experiment station designated by General James Edward Oglethorpe when he founded the Georgia colony in 1733. As a result, the Children's Botanical Garden of Tiles will coordinate and enhance the study of horticulture, history, art, and science among school aged children.
