            <head>Biographical information</head>
            <p>The Couper family emigrated from Glasgow, Scotland in 1775 and settled in St. Simons Island, Georgia. The Wylly family emigrated from Belfast, Scotland in the mid eighteenth century and settled in St. Simons Island, Georgia as well.</p>

            <head>Scope and content note</head>
            <p>This collection contains family correspondence, deeds, diaries, family histories, family trees, newspaper clippings, and other miscellaneous materials relating to the Couper and Wylly families of St. Simons Island, Georgia from 1772 to 1955. Of particular interest are the letters written by members of both families serving in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. There are also typed transcriptions of many of these letters that have been done by various family members over the years. Also included is a diary that belonged to Margaret Armstrong Wylly (1771-1862) which includes not only diary entries but lists of African Americans who worked on her family's plantation in St. Simons Island from 1827 to 1847.</p>
