            <p>Nathan Crawford Barnett was born in 1801 and lived in Milledgeville, Georgia. Barnett served as the Georgia Secretary of State from 1843 to 1849 and 1851 to 1853.</p>

            <head>Scope and content note</head>
            <p>This collection contains a letter that Nathan Crawford Barnett wrote to the Office of the Secretary of State on 20 January 1873 certifying the names of people who he commissioned as Justices of the Peace in Chatham County, Georgia in 1853. The list of appointed Justices of Peace and the district that they served is also included.</p>
