            <head>Biographical information</head>
            <p>Lawrence E. Babits is a professor who specializes in maritime material culture and military history. He currently teaches at East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina where he teaches classes in method and theory in nautical archaeology, material culture studies, small boat documentation, and field schools. During the 1980s, Babits was a professor at Armstrong Atlantic State University (AASU) in Savannah, Georgia, where he was involved in the Center for Low Country Studies. The Center for Low Country Studies was a part of the history department at AASU and was integral in promoting research activities that dealt with topics related to coastal Georgia and the Atlantic coastal region and Babits contributed a lot of research to this program.</p>

            <head>Scope and content note</head>
            <p>This collection contains archaeological surveys, newspaper clippings, photographs, slides, student reports, and field notes relating to Lawrence E. Babits and his archaeological research on areas in Chatham County, Georgia from 1980-1990. The locations Babits researched include the Augustine Creek, Causton's Bluff, the Savannah River, and Tybee Island. Also included are student reports Babits collected while a professor at Armstrong Atlantic State University and his research on local evidence of prehistoric man found in the Savannah area.</p>
