Scope and Content Note

This is an artificial collection created by the Georgia Historical Society by compiling maps, some from other manuscript collections, into a single collection. It is unknown when this collection was created, but most of the materials were processed during the 1980s. The maps concern Savannah, Chatham County, and other cities and counties in Georgia; other Southern States; North America; the United States; and Europe. Also included are navigation maps, Civil War maps, Revolutionary War maps, Railroad maps, and maps of Cherokee and Creek territories.

The collection is organized into thirteen series: 1. Savannah; 2. Chatham County- General; 3. Chatham County - Tracts; 4. Georgia - General; 5. Georgia - Cities/Counties/Other locations; 6. Southern States; 7. United States; 8. North America; 9. Europe; 10. Navigation maps; 11. Revolutionary War; 12. Civil War; and 13. Miscellaneous.

All maps in this collection are also individually cataloged in the Georgia Historical Society’s online catalog. Map cataloging was funded by a 2009-2011 Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) grant.

This collection includes a box of negatives which are restricted from patron use.
