Georgia Days' Purpose

For 275 years, the celebration of the founding of the Colony of Georgia at Savannah on February 12, 1733, by James Edward Oglethorpe has been a tradition among Georgians.  The Georgia Historical Society annually recognizes this important anniversary by promoting the study and preservation of our state's rich history and the historical sites, documents, and other materials that offer a window on that past. 

On this special occasion, the 275^th anniversary of the colony's founding, we pay tribute to James Oglethorpe, Georgia's founder, as the 2008 GHS's Georgia Days Honoree.  Please join us in commemorating the founding of Georgia, honoring the life and legacy of General Oglethorpe, and celebrating our state's unique and storied past.

Curriculum Materials
