The Georgia Historical Society’s premiere annual fund-raising event and the exciting finale of the Georgia History Festival is the annual Trustees Gala. Each year, this elegant and much-anticipated event draws Georgia’s top business and civic leaders to honor and pay tribute to the best our state has produced. This year, GHS presents “Eau de Vie” a grand evening of old world charm, including lively conversation with the inductees and other local, state, and national leaders.

The highlight of the Gala is the induction by Governor Nathan Deal of the year’s Georgia Trustees, two citizens of Georgia who exemplify a lifetime of excellence in their work and philanthropic accomplishment. The 2013 Trustees, philanthropist and Chick-fil-A founder Truett Cathy and Atlanta real estate entrepreneur and philanthropist Herman Russell, will be in attendance to receive their awards. Following the presentations, the new Trustees will engage in a moderated conversation, featuring questions on topics ranging from business to philanthropy to history and life philosophies.

The Georgia Trustees

In conjunction with the Governor’s Office, the Georgia Historical Society reconstituted the Georgia Trustees as a way of recognizing Georgians whose accomplishments and community service reflect the highest ideals of the founding body of Trustees.  The original Georgia Trustees, a governing body chartered and appointed by His Majesty King George II of England in 1732 to establish a new colony in North America, founded the Georgia colony upon the principle of Non Sibi, Sed Aliis, “Not for Self but for Others.” They established and governed the colony with this vision until their disbandment in 1752, after which Georgia became a royal colony. Reestablished in 2009, the Governor will make an annual appointment of new Trustees whose history-making accomplishments and service reflect the original Trustees’ ideals.
